James Stanley Emery papers, 1855 - 1899.

The collection consists of addresses written and given by Emery on a variety of topics to a number of audiences, particularly at the Kansas state universities and clubs, on religion and history, and other similar topics; incoming correspondence, notices, letters of introduction and authorization, and other materials, 1855-1899; day books and account books; business memoranda book including records of shareholders in Delaware Town Company of Lawrence, 1886-1895; financial journal kept by Emery, including accounts with the Baptist Church of Lawrence from 1865-1870; deeds and mortgages; other legal instruments, including abstracts of titles, agreements, receipts, etc.; commissions, licenses, appointments, and other such certificates; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings on topics of interest to Emery personally and professionally; a record book of the town company of Skiddy, Morris County; and other miscellaneous materials. Some of the materials are from the territorial era and involve the New England Emigrant Aid Company or the troubles particularly affecting Lawrence during this period; some of the materials concern Native Americans in Kansas and the foundation of the Haskell Institute in Lawrence.

James Stanley Emery was born in Franklin County, Maine in 1826. Educated at Waterville College, he was admitted to the bar in New York in 1854. He was involved with the New England Emigrant Aid Company, coming to Kansas with the second party of immigrants, and generally in free state activities in Kansas to ensure that it became an anti-slavery state when it entered the Union.
